Learning New Things

For the last 2 weeks I went on a long holiday around the globe, and went to a lot of destinations. During the trip I had a lot of fun in activities and experiences that we couldn’t see anywhere else. We had lots of fun on the trip but there were a lot of things I found out about my self on this trip.

One thing I learned about myself is that I seemed to of tried new thing while on the trip. For example we went to Canada for a week which is half French half English which meant a lot of crazy dishes like snails etc. It seems weird just by hearing but it is actually really good when you try it in person. I also tried new activities I don’t often like sledding, making maple taffy etc.

That was only one of the things I learned about myself as there is so much more I learned not only about me but different countries. As I did have a really fun time on the big holiday and taking these new things I’ve found out about myself ready for the future.

What is something you have learned about yourself this year in 2020?

End Of The Year Reflection

Year 5 has been a great year with tons of activities and events to do and see that it would be impossible listing all of them! From The Year 5 Market to the Year 5 Production their was lots of highlights. That I can’t wait for year 6 but we still have to think about all of the fun things we have done even if they were a bit funny of didn’t go as well. But first what did happen in year 5? Well lots of things happen during this one year such as the Year 5 Market, Sovereign Hill camp, Toonallook, the Production and so much more fun events we have done!

One of the highlights I had is the year 5 market, that let us run our own business and see what it was like. It helped us in how to sort money and creativity in making our products to sell at the market. We also got to meet new while we were selling our items like other year 5’s or other kids in other year levels. But even though the process to get our market done was very hard like products and our loan from Carey in the end a good business came to every market stall.

Toonallook was also very fun and something that made memories because we got to there for 3 nights instead of 2 like we did at Sovereign Hill, the activity’s were really fun like kayaking or the bike ride while koala spotting. Something else I loved at Toonallook was that we found some pretty cool things on the way like we saw jellyfish in the water while we were fishing or that we saw a koala in a tree before we were about to leave.

The production that happened a few weeks ago was something else that I enjoyed because it was mainly a funny which when we practiced was a bit funny but still explained about Australian history and the events. It was also fun practicing or seeing the other cast or scenes preform and learn from others that could help me when I’m on stage. Even though I had only one line in the play I was still good in the finished product of the production after all, I also liked how the crowd would laugh at some of the parts of our play.

But year 5 wasn’t all about the fun events as we had to learn at least a bit of the day in year 5, I have learned a lot of new things like multiplication, lattice, sizzling starts and so much more! Something else we got to do is coding this term by taking some coding classes and tutorials that helped us in how to learn how to the programs and how to make projects which some people enjoyed a lot. Some of our term units we had like Brain Grow in term 1 on how what actions we do can effect the brain or how to change our actions and got to do fun experiments to do with the sessions. Term 2 wad all about marketing which was our year 5 market that we had lots of fun doing in running our own businesses. Term 3 wad all about then gold rush and the Eureka stockade that we got to go to Sovereign Hill, as the camp was alright but Toonallook was a lot more better. Term 4 was all about our production about Australian history that was fun to preform.

It was very enjoyable to be in year 5 and to do all of these fun activities and events through out the year. I could change nothing about 2019 and year 5 and can’t wait for year 6 and all of the fun things we get to do as a year 6. And I have seen my dreams that I had since the start of the year, but now I’m used to some of the things that we might get to do next year like Toonallook. Now my year 5 journey is close to a end and year 6 is about to start but I did love year 5 and will always love year 5.

What is your favourite event or activity that happen this year and why?

Year 5 Production

The year 5’s have been working on a production this term and after a ton of rehearsals we have preformed days ago and year 5 want to share our thoughts. Our production play name is called Hanging Onto The Bottom Of The World, our production was based of Australian history with a pinch of comedy. And it was exciting to see our parents see our work and effort we have put into our play.

The production had scenes such as brides, first fleet, taxation and customs, gold rush, federation and women rights. My role was the 2nd federationist which meant I was in the federationist scene which was placed like cricket game with anti billites as batsmen and federationist as fielders, what made this scene very funny was seeing 2 people be dragged off the stage! But even though I had one line I still mastered that line and I showed lots of expression in each of the play. Even thought I had one line and one role I still had to have a few more roles, like I was the bridesmaid for Queensland as I got the chance to hear the other brides crybaby and pipsqueak. I was also a convict that had to make the colonies of Australia and listen to the soldiers and Governors. Nearly in every scene the crowd always laughed especially when the tea ladies came on serving cup of tea and sandwiches to the crowd unexpectedly! Or when Queen Victoria came in on a tricycle!

We did have to do rehearsal in order to get the play perfect and running smooth which was a lot of trial and error. Something that was confusing was that our scene was being played so many times that I couldn’t see the other scenes being done until a few days! But when we did finally see the other scenes and cast doing their rehearsals it was Funny seeing the other people messing up on their lines. Something I noticed when we did rehearsals was that they seemed longer than the actual production performance, that was probably because people kept messing up.

There were a lot of challenges to face like sometimes my scene wouldn’t go smooth because some people kept forgetting their lines especially the commentators so I had to wait longer but in the final production it was perfect. Something else that was difficult was when we finally got props and costumes to use it was hard to get into the costumes for some people or that the props distract people which was the reason why we lost the original tiara for Tasmania with Tasmanian Devils on it. But apart from the costumes, forgetting lines and props rehearsals and the final play went smoothly. Some PLA’s I showed during rehearsals and the final production was courage because it’s nervous to be on stage with a bunch of people watch you at the same time but with courage it felt like I was normal of that forgot that people were watching us! I also showed knowledge because the more we started to get used to our characters and expressions.

During rehearsals we also had to see other scenes and maybe learn from others. When I saw other people say their lines I could realise that some people liked having one line or lots of lines as other wanted more lines or thought the t was frustrating learning a lot of lines. Many people not knowing what drama or not liking acting found out in the production that they liked acting.  Sometimes people who didn’t even have lines at the start and only had to do actions then into lots of lines to say during different scenes. Some highlights of the play is when I got to hear other scenes I weren’t in like the gold rush scene when I had a big break and a bit of time to waste since it was dark and we couldn’t do anything and it was cool seeing all of the lights change colours as it seeps into the dark backstage.

What performance or musical had you watch and what was it about if not what would be a great performance or musical to watch?

Book Chat Book of 2019

We have had lots of book chat books we have read for the past year with wonderful stories and plot twists! From family and friendship to fantasy, and we all have our favourites including me. Now we have had a lot of book chat sessions and books to read and they were all good and had great stories but a favourite means only one.

My favourite book chat of 2019 is Raymie Nightingale by Kate DiCamilo! This book is about a girl named Raymie who lives in Florida with her friends and in the summer a baton twirling contest is on and Raymie and her friends decided to participate in the contest for a grand prize, Raymie thinks if she wins the contest she’ll get on the newspaper and would want her dad to come back home.

I really enjoyed this book because it had a great story which was fun to read and see what’s next and did have a moral at the end of the story. I also liked it because some of parts of the story could simulate some things that had gone through in my life and that books can make big connections. This book was fitted in family and friendship genre because it had to do with a friendship they had to keep during this contest and shows how strong and weak the friendship gets.

What is your favourite book you have read this year and why?

Animal Adaptations

What do you think about a tropical holiday? The beach, sipping on refreshing drinks all day and the su- over there! Stands a pack of flamingoes with they’re long necks and newborns. Some are pale pink as others have reddish pinkish feathers! They’re very beautiful except from their babbling noises. For the past few weeks we’ve been researching on a animal and their adaptations. But what are adaptations? Adaptations are things that animals do or parts that a animal has like fur of a polar bear, how dogs bark to protect it’s territory or how snakes produce venom.

I decided to research on flamingos, but firstly what are flamingos? Flamingos are big birds with beaks and long legs but live in lakes, wetlands and oceans. They’re 6 species of flamingos as some examples are the scarlet flamingo the live in The Bahama’s, Cuba, Haiti and along the coast of Central and South America, but that is just one specie of flamingos as they’re more! The appearance of flamingos are the pink or black feathers of flamingos, their long necks and the long legs.

Flamingos live on diets on algae, shellfish, molluscs and crustaceans. All of these foods contain pigments called carotenoids which is what makes flamingos feathers pink, without these types of foods their feathers can fade to white due to the lack of carotenoids. This is why when they are kept in zoos they’re feed a diet containing carotenoids. Carotenoids are pigments which is a mix of yellow, orange but mostly red which gives colour to autumn leaves, tomatoes and other plants.

Behavioural adaptations are adaptations which control what they do or behave as it could have to do with keeping out predators or mating calls. Flamingos make babbling noises to keep predators away which makes them scared of coming to their sight, they also do this to attract other flamingos so that they stay together which is why you’ll find them in large groups most of the time. In order for flamingos to rest they put all of their weight one leg and rest, like us and other animals that lay down in order to rest but for flamingos their legs are to long in order to lay down to rest like other birds and animals but can stable balance on one leg so they use that in order to rest. Flamingos can fly so when they fly they like to stay together while flying and also like to travel to their area’s of the world which can take weeks and months.

Structural adaptations are adaptations that have to do on how their bodies work or look which might be layers of fat or big wings. Flamingos have big beaks in order to get food from the water like shellfish and algae and drain the water from it’s beak and then eats. They also have long necks so their beaks can reach the water to get food because if their beaks are to short they won’t be able to get their food and carotenoids pigments. Their webbed feet helps them place their feet perfectly into the sand and dirt so they don’t fall into the water due to their slender bodies and weight. Flamingos have average sized wings because they are still flying birds but they don’t do this most of the time but their wings can adapt to their weight in order to fly. They do swim in the water sometimes to which is how they can squeeze their legs into their body to make their legs smaller so they can swim normally.

A flamingo in the water

Physiological adaptations are adaptations which are produced on the body that could protect them from predators or feed their babies. Flamingos feather can be from pale pink to reddish pinkish or even black! This depends on where they live say for example flamingos in South America have pink feathers. When flamingos feed their babies they produce a pink fluid that comes from the feathers into the baby’s mouth, this substance is made in the digestive system of the parents called crock milk which only 3 birds produce this stuff such as pigeons, penguins and flamingos.

Give me a example of a behavioural adaptation of any animal and how does it use this adaptation in the wild?

Family Celebrations

Spending time wth your family is important especially since in holidays and celebrations, but some families are different in traditions and culture so I’ll show you what celebrations our family does. But before I tell you the celebrations I do what celebrations are there? Mostly depending on where you live what you celebrate is different like Americans celebrate Thanksgiving and Mexicans celebrate Day of the dead.

Our family celebrates Valentine’s Day which is celebrated in February, for people who don’t know what Valentine’s Day is it’s a day where you gift roses or gifts to loved ones as for us we get a rose to keep in our rooms. We it’s exciting for us since my brothers birthday is a few days after Valentine’s Day.

We also celebrate Easter which is celebrated in April on Easter Sunday where the Easter bunny puts chocolate egg around people’s backyards (mostly the backyards of children) and then the next day children come to collect the eggs. Most people celebrate Easter the death of Jesus which happened on Good Friday.

Since my family is part Vietnamese we celebrate Chinese New Year which not many people celebrate because it has no meaning to them. But for my family we care, we get our cousins to come over and have a big lunch and all of the kids get red envelopes with money inside of them because the colour red scares away bad luck.

We also celebrate Halloween but not as much as Christmas or Easter, many people don’t like Halloween because it’s part of a story of Jesus, it’s mostly all about fear and horror or that they’re too old to trick or treat! But Halloween is when people decorate their houses with spooky decor like spiders, cobwebs and carve pumpkins into jack o lanterns. On October 31st people go to house and get lollies to probably sweeten the spooky night.

Christmas the jolly celebration of the year! Like all other families we celebrate Christmas, if you are not sure what Christmas is in the month of December where people get ready for 25th of December which is Christmas Day, people like to count down to Christmas with a advent calendar which on every day until Christmas you get a little treat of item. They also get fir trees and decorate them with ornaments, lights and a star at the top. Many people like me also come to New York City where it snows mostly and makes a really dreamy place to wake up on Christmas Day. On the night of Christmas Eve (December 24th) Santa comes to people’s houses and place presents under their trees but many don’t believe in Santa as other people believe in this spirit and place milk and cookies for Santa to eat. On Christmas Day people come to their Christmas trees and open the presents from Santa and family and friends, some people also like to invite family over for a Christmas lunch or dinner to enjoy the jolly spirit! Many people don’t know this but Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus and some people like to sings carols based on the birth of Jesus in their homes or on the streets.

rockerfeller street has in New York around Christmas.

New Years Eve is a exciting celebration for all because of the final minutes and seconds of the year and to move onto next year for the fun to repeat again. The last day of December at night people like to come to the city and see fireworks and stay for the last seconds of the year. Many new channels like to place countdowns to the next year. And once it hits midnight the next year will come for more exciting celebrations and events!

What celebration do you or your family enjoy the most and why?

My Avatar

We have been recently been updating and making our avatars for our blogs. A avatar is a profile picture for blogs or anywhere else you can comment on that you can use apart from your real face. You can also use it to identify what they look like and even find some info based on what they used for their avatar like what there favourite colour is.

This is my avatar, I have short straight dark brown hair and I also have brown eyes. Which makes allows people to know what I look like but without a real picture of me. Depending on what avatar app or website you use you can be creative with your avatar. If you want to make a avatar with the same website we used to make our avatars use this link.

Toonallook Camp

We have just came back from Toonallook leaving everyone tired but doesn’t mean we can’t make a blog post on how lovely this camp was! If you don’t know what Toonallook is like it’s a camp site for only our school and the area also had other school camp sites too. Unlike Sovereign Hill Toonallook we get to stay for 4 days and 3 nights! The word Toonallook is the aboriginal word for ‘home of fish’ since near Toonallook there are fishing areas.

Some of the things I liked about this camp is when we got to go kayaking because we got to paddle out into the ocean and did a fun game of soccer but kayaking, we also got to race on our kayaks back to the shore and some people got to tip their kayaks over and we also got to take a dip in the cold ocean water. I also liked the koala spotting over at Raymond island because we got to ride our bikes around Raymond island and stop by at area which was loaded with koala’s! Some parts of the area were really rife to ride in like the heavy sand or the tree roots, but in the end of the bike ride we managed to see 31 koala’s.

Something I found really challenging was fishing because once we putted our bait into the water it just stood there waiting for it to escape the water of the ocean. Since fishing is basically not waiting it was a lot of waiting! We had waited so long leading our fishing lines in the ocean but apparently the fishes had already eaten lunch! The Toona photo rally was something else that was very hard because you were sighed a picture and had to find the location of where the picture was taken then had to memorise some letter them had to write them down. But some of the locations we have not even seen which made it really hard. People kept asking people if they had found the locations of some of the photos, some people were booming through it as others like us were already on the first photo!

At Toonallook there were a lot of character strengths we had to show like curiosity because some activities people had never done like fishing or kayaking which made the activity more exciting for them. Courage was one of them too because in the bike riding at Raymond Island there were area’s of the path way were so hard to ride through people had to get off their bikes as other attempted to ride through the sand and a few succeeded. Communication was also very important because in kayaking, bike riding or the photo rally without communication then we would be on our own path, in kayaking we had to communicate which way we had to go so we didn’t get lost in the ocean, in bike riding we had to communicate where we were going and if we had to stop if there was a car, in the photo rally we had to communicate to our partner where the location could possibly be.

Hard Road Ahead

term we have been learning about the Gold rush including the events and how it changed Australia. We have done research, went to Sovereign Hill and made a diorama abased on this unit.  I had lots fun learning about this unit and going to Sovereign Hill.

We learned on how life on the gold fields on how you had to live in a tent and that education was on of the important things in the gold rush. But the reason why most people came to Australia was to get gold and strike rich as many people ended up more poor and even worse died on the gold fields. Some of the businesses were very different to today, like at Ballarat Times that is where they would buy newspaper for about a shilling or the Gold Office where you would sell your gold for money.

A event around in Ballarat was the Eureka Stockade which was about on how in order to mine for gold they needed a license that they had to pay 30 shilling a month! Then at the Eureka Hotel when James Scobie was killed at the hotel by James Bently, then 10 days later 10,000 miner came to the hotel and burned it down to the soil. But after court Bently was found not guilty, this made the miner mad and meet at Bakery Hill and burned their licences and then on 3 December 1854 the miners made a stockade and planted a southern cross flag in the middle and then it was war between troopers and the miners. The fight only last 20 minutes as the troopers managed to break down the stockade resulting 22 miner and 5 troopers dead after the stockade.

We also had to make a diorama based on a building around in Ballarat, our building was the Gold Office where miners would sell their gold for money then be sent to the gold pour. The Gold Office is also known for the miners that sold their nuggets for money such as the welcome nugget and the welcome stranger.

Some things I learned during this unit was like how to make and annotate a new paper article since we had to make a article based on our building we had to build for our diorama. As still based on the 1800’s and something else I learned is new vocabulary like how words were said in the 1800’s like replacing sick with unwell. Not only history I learned but I learned about fractions in maths this term. Since at the start when I first didn’t know about improper or mixed fractions but now I do.

While making our diorama we had to work hard to make it as we saw it. Like we had to use collaboration when if we didn’t work together we would get nothing done which the key to working in groups. Imagination was also important since we had to use our thoughts when we were at Sovereign Hill to make it like making decorations and furniture for our building like nuggets, tables, books etc.

Some of the things I enjoyed doing in this unit is making our diorama because we got to actually do something ourselves to make and we also had to programs a dash to go around the road of the diorama which was fun since I liked to code and some of the debugs were really funny. I also enjoyed Sovereign Hill since we got to see the mines, dress up as the olden day school children, try some raspberry drops and watch the sound and light show.

I really enjoyed this tern in making our diorama and going to Sovereign Hill. This was a build up of what we learned last year since we learned about convicts and then this year we learned about the gold rush and the Eureka stockade.

When was gold found in Ballarat?

Book Week 2019

For book week this year we had to look at some non fiction books and look at the features of the book then vote for which one we liked the best. There were lots of types of books that explained and had different images, layouts and info about that topic. As some of the other year levels had to look at other types of books like picture fiction and other different non fictions. The books we had to pick from were Make Believe, Bouncing Back, Sorry Day, Our Birds, Waves and Happiness Box.

We had to judge a book based on information, layout and images but there are more things a non fiction can include. A layout can effect spacing for lines and gaps to place pictures which doesn’t always have to be up to down or left to right. Some pictures are also important since you can show images or framing based on the topic of the book like if you have a book on basketball you can show a famous basketball player in the book. The information can really effect the quality of the book, if you don’t provide enough information the book might not be helpful for the reader if there using it to research a topic. Another thing that a non fiction book can provide is if it shows a story while giving information to the reader or it can be a basic non fiction that just shows about the topic and shows the information not in a story.

All of the books were great but we could only vote one book. The book I thought and also some of the other year 5’s was Make Believe which was about riddles and optical illusions. I chose this book because the illustrations were really good including the front cover and also provided info on how the illusions work and about how to solve the riddles. The book was also good for things to do when you’re bored since you can try and solve a riddle in the book and can also show the illusions and riddles to family and friends for something to do together. The book was really long which was a good thing since you could see thousands of riddles and illusions so you could never get bored or tired of reading the book.

My and other favourite non fiction book

What else makes a non fiction book great or interesting to read?
